A Perfect Start to the New Year

Last night I fell asleep with one of my sons lying on each side of me and the sound of the waves crashing filling my ears. It was just about perfect. Turns out that other than the traffic, just about everything out here in Hawaii feels just about perfect.

I know, it doesn't seem very revolutionary to rave about what is likely one of the most visited beach vacation destinations around but for me, for my family it is. Despite the fact that Scotty and I have been together for 11 years, this is our first real vacation. Almost every other time we've traveled somewhere it has involved a road trip (which is a vacation for some but not so much for me), family or staying with friends. We never even went on a honeymoon.

This time it's different though. Yes, we do have lots of friends on island, we're a military family, who wouldn't know at least two or three people out here, but we're not staying with them. We have a gorgeous ocean front room at a beach resort, we're doing a ton of touristy things and we're just relaxing and enjoying our family. The television has been off, the computers have been shut down and the only reason we have internet hooked up now is for Scotty's job (I don't even want to know how many emails he had waiting for him...please tell anyone you know playing the slate that the detailer deserves to go on leave too! :)).

By escaping the mainland completely I've been able to get a good start on my goals for myself, I've even gone for a run out here. Getting away to spend time with my little family, some fabulous friends and in an island paradise was the perfect way to kick off my new me. Now (well in a few days) my challenge will be to carry all of these positive feelings and changes home with me and nurturing them and allowing them to grow even more. But that's a post for another day.
